A Team is a workspace where team members can collaborate on anything! Teams are used to organize projects and conversations across a set of Channels where work takes place, like file sharing, video and text chatting, task management and whiteboarding.
The backbone of collaboration in 365
Teams are more than meets the eye. A Team is also a 365 Group, a collaborative workspace with its own Outlook inbox, SharePoint site, OneNote notebook, and Planner board.
A Team can be used for anything. Many companies organize Teams by department, labeling them Marketing, Operations, Engineering, etc. Others use them for coordinating specific projects like launching a new product or planning a co-worker's birthday party.

Consider the following example of a Team (365 Group) created by an IT Department to manage their help desk, organized into channels for team members to collaborate on three aspects of the help desk process.

Different Use Cases
The example below shows a contrast between organizing Teams by department and using a Team to organize a specific project, like redesigning a company website.

Collaborate with Tabs
The last step of the Microsoft Teams hierarchy is a Tab (Team > Channel > Tab). Tabs appear across the top of each channel and represent different collaboration methods for the channel.
Every team has the following tabs by default:
- Posts - Used for chat posts on a discussion board
- Files - Used to house files shared or uploaded within the channel
- Wiki - Used to draft quick knowledge articles for members covering any topic
You can add more first and third-party apps as Tabs to boost your team's workflow, like adding a Planner task board to manage team tasks, collecting survey results using Microsoft Forms, or embedding a website for in-app viewing.
