This walkthrough covers three easy ways to create a team from the Teams tab.

  • Create a new Team from scratch
  • Create a new Team from an existing Group
  • Create a new Team using a Template
Note: Creating a new Team will also create a new Microsoft 365 Group. To understand how 365 Groups work, check out this breakdown.

Create a new Team from scratch

Open the Teams tab on the left sidebar.

  • Click Join or create a team
  • Hover over the box labeled "Create a team" and click Create team
  • Select From scratch
  • Select a privacy preference for your new Team
  • Give your Team a name and write a brief description
  • Click Create
  • To add a member or 365 Group to your new Team, search for a name, select it and click Add (Click Skip if you don't have any members to add)
  • Set the permission level to Owner or Member for each user or Group you added
  • Click Close to add the members

Your new Team will appear on the list of accessible teams in the Teams tab. The General channel is always included by default.

Duplicate an Existing Team

You can create a copy of an existing team to carry over apps, team members, channels and more to a new team.

  • Click Join or create a team
  • Hover over the box labeled "Create a team" and click Create team
  • Select From a group or team
  • Select Team
  • Choose an existing Team as your template
  • Rename the team, add a description, set your preferred privacy setting, and choose which elements you want to copy to your new team (e.g. channels, tabs, apps, etc.)
  • Click Create to generate the Team

Generating the team may take a couple of minutes, especially if you selected multiple elements from the template. When it's ready, your new Team will appear on the list of accessible teams in the Teams tab (the General channel is always included by default).

Create a Team Using a Template

Microsoft has put together a catalog of helpful Templates to help kickstart your next team. Templates come with a set of recommended channels and apps for specific use cases, like new hire onboarding or coordinating a help desk.

  • Click Join or create a team at the bottom of the list pane
  • Hover over the box labeled "Create a team" and click Create team
  • Choose a template from the section labeled Select from a template
  • Review the list of pre-set channels and apps that will be added to your team
  • Select your preferred privacy setting (private or public)

  • Give your team a name and add a description
  • Rename your channels (optional)
  • Click Create to generate your new team

Your new Team will appear on the list of accessible teams in the Teams tab (the General channel is always included by default)
